We hear it all too often. Garages no longer house cars and instead become dumping grounds or hoarding spots and this one was no exception.
Our client wanted to create a room that was multi-purpose but, as a cake maker, was also suitable for her to work in and to free up space in the house so we needed to keep as much internal space as possible.
We sealed in the garage doors and then installed a fire board ceiling, creating a space above for a loft, adding in the hatch and a ladder. We insulated the loft and the stud work along the garage wall before building 52.5mm dot n dab insulated plasterboard walls. To let in more light, we cut out and installed two 1000mm (w) x 1200mm (h) UPVC openable windows. Next, we built a 50mm Celotex floating floor after we had added DPM flooring and then a laminate floor was laid on top along with 94mm bullnose MDF skirting.
The new room was professionally plastered with a new consumer unit added and our electricians liaised with our client throughout the build to determine how many downlights and sockets were required. The room was painted and two air vents added to ensure an air flow through.
As an additional extra, our client chose to install an air con unit that both cools and heats, ensuring she has the perfect temperature all year round.
Repurposing the garage has created a new haven and it is now loved again. What a great use of a once ignored space!
